The 4 C's of Diamond Buying: Everything You Need to Know Before You Say "Yes"

Shopping for a diamond is one of the most exciting purchases you'll ever make—but it can also feel overwhelming. With so many shapes, sizes, and grading terms, knowing where to begin isn't always easy.

One of the most important things to understand is the 4 C's: Cut, Color, Clarity, and Carat Weight. These four characteristics determine a diamond's beauty, quality, and value. Once you understand how they work together, you'll be able to shop with confidence and choose a diamond that's perfect for you.

1. Cut

If there's one characteristic that has the biggest impact on a diamond's beauty, it's cut.'

Normally, diamonds have a cut grade of "good" or higher, so it is rare to find one that has a "fair" or "poor" grade. 

A diamond's cut refers to how well it has been shaped and faceted—not its shape (round, oval, pear, etc.). A well-cut diamond reflects light beautifully, creating the sparkle and brilliance diamonds are famous for.

Cut grades typically include:

• Excellent
• Very Good
• Good
• Fair
• Poor

2. Color

When it comes to diamonds, the less color, the higher the grade.

Diamonds are graded on a scale from D to Z:

• D–F: Colorless
• G–J: Near Colorless
• K–M: Faint Color
• N–Z: Noticeable Color

The standard color that many diamonds come in are in the G–I range and there is usually no visible color. However, the lower you go down the scale, the more noticeable it will become.

Our Tip: People usually go for better color over clarity as it is more noticeable to the naked eye whereas clarity can really shine under a microscope. 

3. Clarity

Clarity measures the tiny internal characteristics (called inclusions) and external imperfections (called blemishes) that formed naturally as the diamond grew.

Clarity grades include:

• Flawless (FL)
• Internally Flawless (IF)
• Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 & VVS2)
• Very Slightly Included (VS1 & VS2)
• Slightly Included (SI1 & SI2)
• Included (I1–I3)

It's important to remember that many inclusions are microscopic and cannot be seen without magnification.

4. Carat Weight

Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not necessarily its size.

While larger diamonds are generally more valuable, two diamonds with the same carat weight can appear very different depending on their cut and proportions.

For example, a 1.00-carat diamond may appear larger than a 1.15-carat diamond with a much larger depth measurement.

Many people assume they need the highest grade in every category, but that's rarely necessary.

The best diamond is one that balances the 4 C's according to your personal preferences and budget. Sometimes choosing a slightly lower color or clarity grade allows you to invest in a better cut or a larger carat weight—resulting in a diamond that looks even more stunning.
